Storage Virtualization Storage Virtualization refers to the process of completely abstracting logical storage from physical storage. The physical storage resources are agregated into storage pools, from which the logical storage is created. With storage virtualization, multiple independent storage devices, that may be scattered over a network, appear to be a single monolithic storage device, which can be managed centrally. Storage Virtualization is commonly used in SANs.

In an effort to stay ahead of the competition, companies have poured capital resources into information technology. In many cases, this has been done on a group-by-group basis, with each line of business creating its own infrastructure silo. Each silo had its own systems, servers, storage, licenses, and support teams—and each shouldered the total cost of owning and operating a standalone infrastructure.Learn more by downloading this paper.

Despite its six syllables, 'virtualization' is a straight - forward concept. It can enable your organization to get more value not only from computer and storage hardware but also from the labor required to keep your systems up and running. Virtualization is an approach to pooling and sharing IT resources so the supply of resources—processing power, storage, networking and so on—can flexibly and automatically meet fluctuating business demand. Virtualization can improve the quality of your IT services, enabling more consistency and predictability of operational availability.

Management of a virtual environment presents unique challenges; many organizations do not thoroughly anticipate the differences in managing a virtual environment from a purely physical environment. Many of your existing management tools may, in fact, only be able to manage physical machines or may collapse under the sudden load of many more systems.

Virtualization is a sea change from the days of one image per physical machine. And the benefits are clear, from better hardware utilization to lower costs to easier management. But while the resulting server consolidation is a good thing, it only solves half the problem. You still need to ensure that best-practice storage management is available to both your physical and virtual servers.
