Drivers of Data Center Growth: Virtualization

Digital Realty

For the purposes of this paper, the discussion will be limited to compute (or server) virtualization. A future paper will discuss storage, network and desktop virtualization and their impact on data center consumption. Compute virtualization is the concept of running more than one "virtual machine" on a single physical computer. An operating system can't tell the difference between a virtual machine and a physical machine, nor can applications or other computers on a network.
